Little Free Library visitsĀ in the morning

While I was in the neighborhood this morning, I couldn’t resist stopping by the Montrose Community Park to check in on the Little Free Library there. (I also had a handful of kids chapter books that I thought might go to good use there.)

Vandalism and neglect

I was a bit disappointed at the level of neglect that Little Free Library #9555 has been experiencing. The Plexiglas front has been broken and removed, and the door’s wooden frame has been smashed in the process. The wooden LFL placard has been torn out and left, with rusting nails, on top of the library. The Plexiglas on the left side has been smashed and partially removed leaving some dangerous jagged edges.

Can you help?

Despite the poor shape of the library, at least it’s still there and functioning! If you have any books to donate to it and don’t want to make the trek, leave them with us and a post-it note, and I’m happy to drop them off in the coming weeks. I felt bad that donating 5 books almost doubled the contents of the library.

I hope someone from the Glendale Department of Library, Arts, and Culture takes notice and stops by to fix things up a bit. Perhaps sending someone up once a month to put in fliers on the Plexiglas sides for events like the upcoming One Book/One Glendale for Younger Readers 2016 event featuring author Katherine Applegate and the book The One And Only Ivan would help keep libraries like this in better shape? Surely there’s a few dollars in the renovation project for the Central Library to help out.

A kind anonymous donor must have either come across our wish list or visits often at night. Someone dropped off a Philips LEDĀ Battery Operated Dewdrop Light package to the library in the last couple of days. As a result, with a few AA-batteries, we’ve now got a 6 hour timer with night lighting (for the top portion of the library only) for lighting the library between 7pm and 1am for the late night book owls in Adams Hill. No more trying to balance your cell phone light while trying to browse books here!

We’ll try to slowly adjust the timer to go on earlier as the sun sets earlier in the Winter, though that means it’ll go off a bit earlier in the late night hours as well.

Thanks again mystery donor!

This cute, but simple, LFL appears to be made out of a reclaimed crate and has a simple tin roof. It fits in well with the architecture of the steward’s house. Some of the books in the bottom portion had some light water damage to their lower edges — perhaps the library isn’t quite water-tight? The selection was reasonably good, particularly for such a tiny library — as LFL’s go anyway.

A well appointed LFL in a well appointed neighborhood! This library is nestled into a fantastic little water resistant garden in the front yard of a cute little home. It’s got a lovely bench to stop and read a bit in as well as nearby seating under the shade of a large tree. The selection of books seems well-curated and simply terrific. How could you not be envious? Though fading and painted a bit quirky, the library itself fits right in with it’s reclaimed wood and spacious interior. I’ll definitely be coming back to visit soon.

This is LFL #1925 which was apparently relocated after spending two years in the Los Feliz area. It doesn’t have a plackard and does look a bit different than the Los Feliz original, but perhaps it’s been redecorated? With two shelves and glass paneled front, this LFL is both roomy and bright. There are handpainted words on the outside that are variations of the phrase “to read” in a variety of languages. It didn’t appear to be highly curated, but has a reasonable selection of interesting books. It’s immediately available right on the street with some seating available just behind it in the yard underneath a nice shade tree, though the set up of the yard doesn’t make it as welcoming as some to indicate that readers are encouraged to lounge about and read. I stopped by a month before Halloween and enjoyed some of the ghost decorations that were already put up in the yard.
