A well appointed LFL in a well appointed neighborhood! This library is nestled into a fantastic little water resistant garden in the front yard of a cute little home. It’s got a lovely bench to stop and read a bit in as well as nearby seating under the shade of a large tree. The selection of books seems well-curated and simply terrific. How could you not be envious? Though fading and painted a bit quirky, the library itself fits right in with it’s reclaimed wood and spacious interior. I’ll definitely be coming back to visit soon.

This is LFL #1925 which was apparently relocated after spending two years in the Los Feliz area. It doesn’t have a plackard and does look a bit different than the Los Feliz original, but perhaps it’s been redecorated? With two shelves and glass paneled front, this LFL is both roomy and bright. There are handpainted words on the outside that are variations of the phrase “to read” in a variety of languages. It didn’t appear to be highly curated, but has a reasonable selection of interesting books. It’s immediately available right on the street with some seating available just behind it in the yard underneath a nice shade tree, though the set up of the yard doesn’t make it as welcoming as some to indicate that readers are encouraged to lounge about and read. I stopped by a month before Halloween and enjoyed some of the ghost decorations that were already put up in the yard.

This may be one of the most lavish Little Free Library set ups I’ve come across. Located on a street corner in a quiet and lovely neighborhood, this LFL is nestled underneath a fabulous shade tree with an adjoining and comfortable bench. Just a few feet away at the corner of the property is a nice little decorative fountain just about the right height for a 5 year old. The library itself is well made and hand painted and lettered with cute decorations. The selection was a bit quirky and not heavily curated, but did have a few fantastic gems. I had the pleasure of visiting on a day with LA’s best weather of the year and the cool breezes made it a lovely oasis to stop and browse for a bit.

Though the front opening wasn’t the most convenient given it’s large size, the platform of the library did have two nice little wings on either side for setting down books (or perhaps one’s drink). The library was relatively spacious inside and definitely bright and fun. If you’re looking for a nice place to take a first date, this along with a small picnic on a nice afternoon could be a cool idea. It’s definitely a nice place to read, even if you bring your own book. I’ll certainly be back.

Hidden away on a relatively windy road (approaching from the South anyway) in Eagle Rock, this library takes the recycled materials mantra pretty seriously. An interesting feat of creative engineering, some of the shelves are almost drawers, but work incredibly well. While not perhaps the prettiest little library around, it does seem very well maintained and well-curated. I was almost jealous of the great selection and the depth and breadth of what was available. I did manage to leave a few books and only take one however–but fair warning that I’m going to be going back soon. Not many of the libraries I’ve visited have a very clear theme, but this one definitely seems to be specializing in contemporary fiction. This is also one of the few libraries I’ve visited that either stamps or puts stickers in their covers — a nice touch, I think. They’re also one of the few libraries I’ve been to that had bookmarks available, though they were all from nearby bookshops rather than homemade as I might have expected from the exterior.

Located on a spacious corner, there was a ton of easy and convenient parking. I also learned a new shortcut through part of Eagle Rock that I hadn’t been aware of previously.

Harry Potter Books Find an Adoring Home

Last week, Maggie, one of our neighbors, sent me a note. She said that at her nearby community garden there was a family with a young daughter who was a major Harry Potter fan. Knowing we might be able to help, Maggie wondered if we might have one or two of the books in the series to donate for a surprise??

Earlier this year we had a very successful Harry Potter Extravaganza Week. Leading up to the event we collected several copies of each of the books. Maggie was pleased to hear we had enough left to be able to put together a surprise book package with nearly brand new hardback copies of all 7 books!

a-happy-harry-potter-readerMaggie thanked us heartily for the help and texted us a photo of the young girl (muggle or witch, I can’t tell?!) who’s happily caring for the books now. The whole experience was so heartwarming that I felt selfish not sharing it with all of our generous donors and patrons who not only help keep our neighborhood Little Free Library alive, but who also allow it to support the surrounding communities that are starving for literature as well.

Thanks again everyone!

Little Free Library #9556

It’s not on the official Little Free Library Map, but this library just outside of the Glendale City Hall has always been pretty well stocked every time I stop by. It’s one of six that Glendale Library Arts & Culture put up in 2015.

A “Little” Library Renovation

With the Central Branch of the Glendale Library closed for renovations, we thought we’d spiff things up a little bit too. (Fortunately, we only needed to close for a minute to do our upgrade.) Thanks, in great part to local donors, today we’ve replaced ALL of the books in the library with over 42 great new titles!

This batch includes:

  • 11 brand new, never before read books
  • 2 books written by a famous local author
  • Fiction
  • Thrillers & mystery
  • A great spread of non-fiction (from medicine and sleep to history and archaeology)
  • Our 4th copy of Wild by Cheryl Strayed (the most popular donation in the last year, but they always disappear as quickly too…)
  • Our 3rd copy of the popular Like Water for Elephants
  • An awesome selection of pulp fiction
  • A tie yesterday(?) for #8 on our list of records for Largest Single One-Time Donations

Be sure to stop by today and resupply your night table.

Donations?

Do you have some books you’re done reading and want to share with your neighbors? We gladly accept your donated books – it’s part of what keeps the library a vital part of the community. Simply place your book donation directly into the library. Not enough space or need more information on donating? Maybe your question is answered here. Otherwise ask below in the comments, and we’ll do our best to help.

Social Media

We try to make it easy to read our posts and get the latest information about the library and what’s going on recently. You can always find the blog or follow us on most of the major social media platforms to get the latest updates. Don’t forget to take a #selfie with the library when you stop by and tag it #LFL8424 on your favorite platform.

Take a book, leave a book.

A New Donation of 12 Terrifically Diverse Books

An anonymous donor has dropped off 12 of the most interesting and diverse books this morning! Non-fiction fans will be particularly pleased.

Since there’s not much space in the library due to our new batch last week, we’ll start putting them out early next week as space becomes available. Thank You kind patron!

Social Media Guest Book Instead of a Traditional Guestbook

Disappearing Guest Books

Fortunately, it’s not the case that Little Free Library #8424’s guest book has ever gone missing (though we have replaced the pen frequently), but I was reading through the LFL Steward’s Group on Facebook about what one might do to prevent a Guest Book from disappearing.

There were lots of interesting ideas and suggestions, none of which gave much hope other than to get a new cheap one and give it another try.

To help out other stewards, below I’ll present a few thoughts on something totally different and inexpensive/free that’s also a win-win from a publicity perspective.

The Social Media Guest Book

Rather than having a physical guest book in your Little Free Library, why not use a social media version of a guest book?!

Put up a hashtag for your library and encourage users to take a selfie and post a note to their social media platform of choice (Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, etc.) If you also include your social media accounts (if any) for your library, they can also tag you so you’ll get a notification about their online “guest book post.”

The benefit of this type of social media guest book is multi-fold:

  • Stewards don’t need to purchase guest books;
  • Stewards don’t need to worry about guest books disappearing with lots of notes and memories;
  • Almost everyone these days has a smartphone and an account on at least one common service;
  • These social media posts will live online for everyone to see;
  • It’s fun (who doesn’t like a good selfie, much less a reason to brag about what you’re reading);
  • And finally, and perhaps most importantly, these social media posts also serve as free publicity to your patron’s friends, family, and neighbors that they stopped by and subtly suggest that other might want to as well.

As an example, I would encourage patrons of Little Free Library #8424 to use the hashtag #LFL8424 and tag @LFL8424 on Twitter (Facebook, Instagram, etc.) with a selfie of themselves, the library, and the book they took along with any note they want to leave.

The reach of their gracious post could also be expanded by the library’s account reposting/retweeting it, which also encourages others in the community to follow suit and participate. (If you have a personal account, you could also like/repost from that account as well as the library’s account.)

Social Media Pro Tips: If you use multiple platforms, try to get the same account name on all of them to make it easier to remember and use regardless of the patron’s platform of choice. Almost all social media sites use some form of hashtag, so just pick one for use everwhere regardless of the platform.

Not a social media ninja or know which sites you might want to use? Take a look at some of the platforms we support here for ideas: A Tiny Library with Its Own Social Media Empire.

Bonus PR Ideas

Libraries could also use social media related ideas like this to do small contests or other giveaways. Perhaps a randomly chosen online post could be chosen monthly for a special give away, or a random post could be selected to choose the book genre/theme for your library’s next takeover?

Another simple, but related idea that we’ve been doing for a while is to feature photos from our traditional guest book on our blog. This way, even if the guest book disappeared, it wouldn’t be a total loss as we have a digital back up.

Do you have a guest book or encourage patrons to engage with your library on social media? I’d love to hear in the comments what you do to encourage participation.

Celebrating fREADom: Happy 4th of July!

In honor of the Declaration of Independence, what better way to celebrate than by reading?!

In fact, we’re reminded that Benjamin Franklin, the only Founding Father who is a signatory of all four of the major documents of the founding of the United States: the Declaration of Independence, the Treaty of Alliance with France, the Treaty of Paris and the United States Constitution, was also the inventor of the first subscription lending library!

While most libraries in America are closed today for the holiday, we wear it as a badge of honor and fREADom to be open all day for your reading pleasure.

For those who’d like to learn more about our hero Benjamin Franklin, we’re putting a brand new first edition of Walter Isaacson’s biography of Franklin into the library today.
